Conversations vs. My Categories vs. Target Lists

Before configuring Conversations, it's important to understand how it differs from other communication features.

Similarities: All three features can message groups of users at once. Target Lists and Conversations both require Secured Access, and administrators can control who is listed in each feature.

Key Differences:

My Categories:

  • Users can subscribe publicly within their app (like YouTube subscriptions)

  • One-way communications that post to user newsfeeds

  • Users subscribed cannot interact with messages or message the poster directly

  • Teachers cannot remove users from category subscriptions

Target Lists:

  • Controlled by administrators only - users cannot add themselves

  • Connects with various features, including Conversations

  • Enables precise targeting of specific user groups

  • When used with newsfeeds: one-way communication

  • When used with Conversations: becomes two-way group conversation

Conversations:

  • Operate like messaging apps (similar to texting)

  • Two-way conversations

  • Can be one-on-one or group messages

  • Fully interactive communication
