Groups: Troubleshooting & FAQs

🔄 Target Lists are now Groups. As of June 2026, Target Lists have been renamed to Groups in the Edlio app. This is a rename with a redesigned interface, not a new system — all your data is preserved (members, filter rules, restrictions, and communication history remain intact). You do not need to recreate or migrate anything.

Groups: Troubleshooting & FAQs

Common Issues and Solutions

Issue: A group is missing members I expect to see

  • Open the group and check the Relationship setting (Normal, Include Parents, Include Children, Only Parents, Only Children) — it controls whether family members are included.

  • For dynamic members, review the filter rules and the AND/OR logic between them; the member list updates live as rules change.

  • Click Sync on the group (or Sync Now on the Groups page to sync all groups) and re-check membership.

  • On district sites, confirm the right sites are selected in the "Add people from" section.

Issue: My import file isn't adding members

  • Static member imports must be CSV or XLSX files containing Student/Employee IDs; only records with matching IDs are added.

  • Additional contact imports use the same file format as the former Target List additional contacts import.

  • Click the info message in the upload area to open the exact file column requirements.

  • Check for typos and stray formatting in the ID column.

Issue: A group shows low reachability (red or amber badges)

  • Open the group and click the channel statistic (App, Email, Text, Voice) to filter the members table to the affected people.

  • Review their contact information in People > Manage People — members without valid contact info for a channel count as unreachable on that channel.

  • Note: additional contacts are never reachable via App; they need a valid email or phone for the other channels.

Issue: I can't edit the members of a classroom group

That's expected. Classroom-synced groups get their membership from the connected classroom. You can only change the relationship setting and add Additional Contacts. To change core membership, update the classroom roster (or its sync source).

Issue: Bulk Edit Permissions skipped some groups

Bulk Edit Permissions ignores classroom-synced groups when your selection mixes regular and classroom groups. Select only classroom groups to open the classroom-specific permissions modal (which controls whether staff can use those groups).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Did I lose anything in the change from Target Lists to Groups?

A: No. The rename is fully backwards compatible. Members, filter rules, restrictions, and communication history were all preserved, and your existing groups work in messaging and visibility settings exactly as before.

Q: What are the new fields on a group?

A: Two fields are new: the group avatar (initials with a color by default; you can pick an icon or upload a photo) and the optional description (up to 750 characters). Existing groups show initials with a color and an empty description until you change them.

Q: How do I keep my most-used groups easy to find?

A: Pin them. Use the pin action on the group (or the toggle in the group's info) and the group stays at the top of the Groups page. You can also search the list — it filters as you type.

Q: Does deleting a group delete its members?

A: No. Deleting a group only removes the group itself and its permissions/site access. The people remain in your records and in any other groups.

Q: Can I make a copy of a group?

A: Yes — use Duplicate. You'll get the create page prefilled with the group's values, named "Copy of [group name]," which you can adjust before saving.

Q: Who can use a group when sending messages?

A: By default, everyone in your school can use a group. If Restricted Access is enabled on the group, only the people added by search or matched by the restriction filters can use it. For classroom-synced groups, the only permission setting is whether staff members can use the group.

Q: What does "Last synced" on the Groups page mean?

A: It shows when the last system-wide bulk sync ran (not individual group syncs). Use Sync Now to sync all groups, or the Sync action on a single group.

Q: Why don't additional contacts show as reachable in the App?

A: Additional contacts aren't app users, so the App channel never applies to them. They're counted in Email, Text, and Voice reachability when they have valid contact info.
