Editing Event Alerts and Notifications in the Edlio App

Learn how automated event alerts, daily/weekly reminders, and push notifications work for school calendars in the Edlio App.

The Edlio App allows schools to keep families and staff informed of upcoming events through automated push notifications, recurring event reminders, and scheduled alerts.

Understanding Event Alerts & Notifications

In the Edlio mobile platform, event alerts and notifications function across two main channels:

  • System Default Event Alerts: During app deployment, automated recurring event alerts (such as daily or weekly upcoming event summaries) are established in the App Newsfeed > Feeds > Event Alerts system. These automated feeds aggregate all active calendars by default to deliver consistent digest reminders to subscribed community members.

  • Calendar-Level Alert Configuration: When setting up external calendar feeds (under Features > Calendars > + New), calendars are automatically enrolled to populate the app's daily and weekly event alert digests. If you wish to exclude a specific internal or staff-only calendar from generating public alerts, click the alert banner link on the calendar creation form to manage feed participation.

  • Subscriber Time Zone & Notification Settings: To ensure events trigger alerts at the correct local hour, use the Use Site's time zone option in calendar settings. This guarantees that event reminders dispatch based on school campus time regardless of subscriber device location.

🔒 User Device Notification Settings: For families to receive event reminders, device-level push notifications must be permitted for the Edlio App in their iOS or Android phone system settings, and the relevant notification category must remain enabled in the app's notification preferences menu.

How multiple calendars behave in feed digests & notification preferences

When schools publish multiple calendar feeds, event reminders and notification digests dispatch according to automated feed aggregation and subscriber preferences:

  • Automated Daily & Weekly Feed Digests: All active, public calendars are enrolled by default into your school's automated Event Alerts digest feed (located under App Newsfeed > Feeds > Event Alerts). Rather than sending multiple separate push notifications that spam families, the system compiles scheduled events across all active calendars into unified morning digests or weekly preview alerts.

  • Excluding Internal or Sensitive Calendars: If a calendar is intended solely for internal faculty or staff schedules (and should not trigger public push reminders), edit the calendar record and deselect the automated alert digest enrollment option.

  • User Notification Preferences & Category Filtering: Families retain granular control over which alerts they receive. In the mobile app's notification preferences menu (accessed via the user profile or settings gear):

    • Push Notifications (Bell Icon): Delivers real-time lock-screen notifications when digests and urgent event alerts are published.

    • In-App Feed Only (Eye Icon): Displays event reminder posts inside the app's activity feed without vibrating or sounding on the lock screen.

    • Mute (X Icon): Completely silences notifications for specific categories or sub-calendars, allowing parents with high school athletes to follow athletic alerts while muting elementary campus reminders.
